It all started with a favor that Mimi Candonaza-Gomez did for her friend back in 2008. And now in 2011, it has become a very successful business with clients going from the local to domestic to international.
She is an IT programmer in the San Antonio College and had been baking goodies for friends and family for more than 10 years. When Pearl English, the friend and supervisor of Mimi, asked for homemade gourmet marshmallows to be used as a party favor, there was no hesitation at all. It will be her first time to create marshmallows!
Mimi went to find recipes for marshmallows when she got home and tweaked them a bit for her own liking until she created the perfect recipe for gourmet marshmallows. Once the basics had been mastered, she added the colors and flavors so hers will be very unique. It was a huge success, which led to the opening of Mia Mallows in May of 2009 with the culprit, Pearl, as her business partner.
The heritage of Mimi as a Spanish lady has influenced Mia Mallows so much. The name of the company is using "Mia" which is "mine" in Spanish. Mimi’s husband called her with a nickname "my little Mallow" therefore Mia Mallows. The first flavored gourmet marshmallows that she made were Chocolate and the delicious Dulce de Leche. She said that these are the exact flavors that she grew up with and these were her initial choices to incorporate in the mallows to see how they worked out.
In 2009, Mia Mallows reached 35 flavors of gourmet marshmallows that she fondly calls marshmallow candy that any client can choose from including the luscious banana, caramel, lemon, peanut butter and saltwater taffy. When you have something in mind that she can go ahead and experiment with, it is for sure that Mimi will try her hand on it. It is actually true that most of her 35 flavors today are products of the many requests she received including the recent request for the incorporation of green tea.
When she was asked what she feels now with her business considering that she was a former software programmer, she just said that she is still in awe about the success that she is currently getting and is still accepting requests for more flavors. She said that in her career before, she is asked to create software for other clients, businesses. But now, she is tasked to do something for her very own gourmet marshmallows and she really enjoys the result.
